I received this book in a Goodreads giveaway, but the thoughts expressed are mine. Feb 01, Ronna rated it really liked it Shelves: I got this free from a blogger.
This is my honest review. Devereaux Sinclair has her hands full running her "five and dime" store in Missouri, and keeping track of her Gran who is loosing some of her memory.
On the other hand, she has the good fortune to have two hunky boyfriends who both want her full attention. In this book--third in the Devereaux Dime Store Mysteries--both men have their hands full trying to keep "Dev" out of trouble.
Dev has I got this free from a blogger. Dev has numerous book and crafting groups that meet at her store. This month's book group has read a poet's book, but instead of lovely verse, the poet bashes everything about women and small towns.
Then he tries to hit on one of the book group members. His reward is murder. His body is found behind Dev's store. Lots of fun romance and interesting competition amongst the characters in this book.
Background information relates to the two previous books in this series, so I suggest reading them first.
Reminders of my times long ago in "five and dimes" made this book particularly interesting for me. Think Swanson has potential for lots more books in this fun series!
Mar 08, Diane rated it really liked it. I received this from Goodreads giveaway. I just finished this wonderful little book by Denise Swanson.
I have never read any of her books before. I know I will look forward to reading some other books by her. This book is a romance mixed with a mystery cozy read to it.
I loved the blend of characters, You can just picture this small town easy going people. The author just brought them to life for you.

We meet Dev who owns and runs a small shop in town and also who takes care of her sweet feisty grandmother who you can not help but love. Dev has also has a love triangle going with two who are about ready to duck it out tow win her.
She really has to do something but does not want to hurt either one. Dev we find is having a hard time making ends meet and decides to open her shop up to several clubs in town.
She opens it up one night to a book club. The main speaker that night is not very gentleman like and storms out in a temper before the meeting has ended.
This is where things pick up and the next morning to Dev's surprise he is found dead behind her shop.
Dev is scared what this will do to her shop and with the help of her two suitors she tries to find out who killed him.
You will laugh at the way things go and also will feel sorry for them at times. This book is just a lot of laughs. I found it a fun read Mar 10, Margaret rated it it was amazing Shelves: Denise Swanson has another winner.
Swanson second series, and it is good as the Scumble River Mysteries. This is the third one in the Devereaux's Dime Store Mysteries, but it can stand alone.
Dev Sinclair was a successful business woman who gives up her well paying job to come home and take care of her grandmother. She opens a DIme Store and decides to let different clubs rent space supplement her income.

With an obnoxious speaker for the Book Club, Dev is plunged into a murder after the speaker's body in found behind her store.
Without giving anything way, Dev and her two boyfriends search for the killer who is complete surprise.
I usually can figure out the culprit but this one was a complete surprise. This is a wonderful cozy mystery.
The romance in the book is fun. Dev and her grandmother are delightful. Every series has to have a character you love to hate, and this is no exception.
Swanson makes you care for her characters which makes this series for me. Buy or check out of the library this book and enjoy a wonderful read.
Mar 14, Anastasia rated it really liked it. After giving a presentation to a book club at Devereaux's dime store, an obnoxious local poet and writer is found dead and dumped in the garbage behind the store.
I enjoyed the book and catching up with all the characters again and I liked the different narratives from the various characters. The love triangle spoilt the book for me though and hopefully it will be resolved soon.
I am looking forwar Dead between the lines by Denise Swanson is the 3rd book in a Devereaux Dime store Mystery series.
I am looking forward to reading the next book and seeing Devereaux's relationship with her father develop further, now that he has been released from prison.
Feb 06, Edel rated it it was amazing. When I started this series I did not think I could love a series as much as Denise's other series set in Scumble River, but I have fallen in love with this Deveraux Dime series and its characters , esp Deveraux who is a cool curvy chick.

Fantastic book, loved it! I love every one of these books! Jul 18, Nancy H rated it liked it. A good mystery set in Deveraux's Dime Story, this story takes place when a man is murdered right after leaving a book club event in Dev's store.

Jun 04, Mayda rated it really liked it Shelves: Dev owns and runs a dime store that really is much more. She makes gift baskets to order, and hosts a variety of meetings, including a book discussion group.
But things go awry at the discussion, and the guest speaker causes a ruckus with unfortunate results. Trying to keep her store running smoothly while caring for her grandmother and dating two very eligible guys has Dev burning the midnight oil and then some.
Highly entertaining, this cozy is one for the books. Sep 14, Ali rated it it was ok Shelves: I liked this series when I first started it a few years ago, but I just couldn't get in to this story.
Maybe it's because I let too much time pass in between reading installments, but I struggled to get through it and it didn't capture my attention.
Oct 30, Sue rated it really liked it. Although the plot was a bit twisted, I really enjoyed all the idiosyncrasies of the folks in this book. I like the fact too that while the heroine did discover the murdered, she did not realize at the time that she was doing so.
Mar 05, Emily Ste rated it really liked it. Love me some Denise Swanson. Whether it's the Dime Store series or the Scumble River series, you can count me in.
My only request is that Devereaux pick between Jake or Noah already!! Dec 25, Sara Smith rated it really liked it.
I liked this book the most so far in the series because it focused more on the mystery and less on the romantic entanglements of the detective.
Mar 06, Delores Alger rated it liked it. She writes a good cozie. Ok Not the best of this series. A bit heavy on the attraction to 2 men, which is best.
The murderer was all too evident. Oct 02, Sarah rated it it was amazing. Wonderful characters, wacky crimes, and a picturesque setting make these easy and fun to read.
I enjoyed this series continuation but it reminds me a lot of Hannah Swenson's situation with her two boyfriends one a dentist and one a cop series written by Joanne Fluke.
At least this series won't make me fat with all those yummy recipes. Mar 02, Tamara rated it really liked it Shelves: So, Dev is trying to make the money while the sun is shining- which is why she opens up the Dime Store to clubs for bit of extra cash.
The first book club meeting, though, may be the last- as the members get peeved with the author for his attitude toward women and small-town life.
Dev knew many were peeved when they left, but she did not know who was peeved enough to kill the author or why they did it- was it because of the book club meeting?
Or is there much more to this story? What Dev knows is this: With a little help from the good doctor, Noah, and the hunk-alicious Deputy US Marshall, Jake- Dev is sure to get to the bottom of this mess, quick, fast and in a hurry.
Which leaves her to think about other things- such as who is the yin to her yang? I enjoy the Dime Store Mystery series!
Dev has hit a groove with me in reading and I found myself not comparing to Scumble River as I have in the past. Getting to know Jake and Noah a bit, through their own thoughts and not the actions we see in the Dev chapters, added a bit to this book.
Right now, the love triangle with Dev, Noah and Jake is fine. A nice cozy mystery with some great characters. Definitely add this to the TBR list!

Good things about this book: We see progress with Kern Sinclair being released from jail, which doesn't happen until the end. Gran has fixed up the apartment above the garage for him to live in, and her memory seems to be doing better.
I'm looking forward to seeing how Dev's relationship with her father progresses. Boone and Poppy are both out of town, so I missed seeing Dev's best friends.
This does give her a bit more time to focus on the investigation, and Jake is more present in this book -- he's actually considering quitting being a US Marshal and staying to work on his uncle Tony's ranch.
Noah is very focused on his mother, Nadine, who appears to be having health problems, but he does manage to help out Dev a bit.
Mar 12, Nancy Wolfe rated it it was amazing. This is a great cozy mystery about a young, single woman Dev who owns a dime store and creates gift baskets to support herself and her grandmother, Birdie.
She has a complicated family history with a father who was arrested for manslaughter and a mother who left her with the grandmother and never was heard from again.
Dev has good friends, two hunky boyfriends, Jake and Noah, who are trying to win her affections, and a good life in the small town.
I loved the naughty moments especially getting This is a great cozy mystery about a young, single woman Dev who owns a dime store and creates gift baskets to support herself and her grandmother, Birdie.
I loved the naughty moments especially getting caught making out with Jake, while he was undercover by the Sheriff. One of the ways that she keeps in the black financially is by hosting book club and sewing meetings.
At the book club meeting the special quest speaker was so unpopular with the members he left early.
He was also very rude with Dev. The writer was found dead out back of the dime store and the fence post from Dev's store was the murder weapon.
Dev must solve this mystery and get things back to normal if she wants her store to survive. She has had experience solving crimes in the two earlier books with help from her friends.
In the previous one, she helped clear her friend Boone who was charged with murder. If you love cozies like I do you will enjoy this book, and with the love triangle it makes the book so much better and interesting.
I have read the two previous books in the series and I like this one better. There are no discussion topics on this book yet.

Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. I enjoy Stephen King and Dean Koontz, perhaps best of all the current sages of horror fiction, mostly because they are not afraid to address the spiritual aspects of fear Now I must add Greg Bear to that mighty duo.
This book is haunting, in so many good ways that to begin to list them will delay you from delving into the book sooner. Do yourself a favor and read this book, then let me know what you think.
One person found this helpful. One of Bear's more overlooked works - I highly recommend it if you're up for a well-written ghost story novella set in Los Angeles County.
This is a re-publication of this book that was originally published in I am glad that it is being re-introduced to readers.
I buy quite a few of Greg Bear's books because the book summaries always sound so good whoever writes his summaries deserves a raise.
And then I end up usually being disappointed - always forgetting that hard science fiction is not my cup of tea. But not this time.
This book is exceptionally good. BUT it's not hard sci fi so that's probably the key. Peter Russell is 58 years old.
He used to direct soft porn movies, has tried rather unsuccessfully being a writer and also failed as a husband.
He has been doing errands for his millionaire neighbors for quite a few years. But life has dumped a load of bad happenings on him over the last couple of years and when he's offered a job with a start-up tech company, he needs the money and the distraction.
But his troubles are far from over. I loved that book and periodically re-read it. But I liked this book - a lot. It is a creepy "what if" tale that had me turning on lights to chase away the shadows in the corners of the room.
I liked protagonist Russell. I liked the pacing of the story. Don't go into it expecting explanations of some of the happenings.
Just relax and prepare to be disturbed. A very well constructed novel within the genre of the macabre via the telling of a ghost story. Peter Russell was at one point a successful director of adult films until one of his two daughters was kidnapped and murdered.
That crime turned Peter into a person just able to eke out a small living by running errands for a California millionaire and having little interest in working for a better life.
A fortunate contact while waiting to talk to his employer introduces him to what the manufacturer describes as a device that will revolutionize the communications industry.
It is called "Trans" and is an exceptionally clear mobile device that can operate anywhere with an incredible low cost of operation. Peter agrees to begin promoting "Trans" and he starts by using it for his own personal needs.
Suddenly he begins to see his murdered daughter and hearing other disembodied voices. The best part of Mr Bear's book is that given the fact of a new communication device somehow reaching out into other dimensions lends logic to the consequences of such an occurrence.
The pace of the book quickens as more and more events occur based on the technology of the "Trans" and make the book more science fiction than a tale of the supernatural designed with fright sequences to tantalize the reader.
But of course, Greg Bear's forte is within the world of science fiction and we have a good novel in that genre rather than one more ghost story.
I received a free electronic copy of this novel from Netgalley, Greg Bear, and Open Road Integrated Media in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you for sharing your hard work with me. This book was originally published by Ballantine Books in I am always tickled when I run across a Greg Bear novel - and am thrilled to see them being re-issued.
Thank you, Open Road Integrated Media, for keeping the oldie's but goodies accessible. This is not a Bear tale that I had run across before.
I can tell you that it is massively scary and a good bit funny, if you can laugh at yourself successfully. We only look old on the outside, us boomer babies.
Well, except for Michelle, but she had a deal going with the devil, I think. No one should look that good pushing I promise you that you will look at your convenient cell phone in a much different way in about 5 hours read time, and nothing about this tale is dated.
I guess I don't understand the bad and mediocre reviews for this book. I thought it was great. Maybe it worked so well for me because I've not read any Greg Bear books.
I'm not big on sci-fi, but I do love the scary stuff. This wasn't horror, but it was a ghost story, of sorts. Truth is, it gave me a big dose of the wollygaggins!
Which is an odd way of saying that occasionally my hair was standing straight up, noises were heart attacks just waiting to happen, and shadows seemed to dance around.
For me, the whole book was moody, and that's what I like in a ghost story. Peter was at times difficult to like, but very easy to love. That ending was kind of incredible.
I was smiling and teary eyed too. My thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for the free e-book. See all 46 reviews. Amazon Giveaway allows you to run promotional giveaways in order to create buzz, reward your audience, and attract new followers and customers.
